Dear All my Chinese friends:

Learning English takes time. Improvements won't happen overnight. I am glad that it is bilingual in
Canada; otherwise, most of immigrants would have been left in limbo. How many of the immigrants
in Canada can speak French?

Jerry Dai's English is fluent, but he is not a native-English speaker. You can simply compare the way
that Jerry speaks English with the way that native speakers do. Try logging on to YouTube and play
some video clips there and you will soon notice the differences between Jerry and native speakers in
terms of using vocabulary; accent and the way they communicate. Even though Jerry has claimed
himself a native speaker, you can tell English is still second nature to him.  As a matter of fact, I've
met many immigrants from China and about 85% of the Chinese immigrants have problems with English.
Because of that, some of them have a misconception that Jerry is a native speaker. When Jerry speaks
English, he still has an accent.

My friends, you've already moved to this country. The Canadian government has not pushed or forced
you to immigrate into this country. But, it's your own decisions that made you come here. So, please
spend time learning the language that Canadians speak here. Since you're already living in an
English-speaking country, please make the best use of communicating with native speakers in English.
IT IS FREE!  YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO ANY ENGLISH CLASSES TO LEARN ENGLISH.
PLEASE DON'T LEARN ENGLISH, BUT LEARN in ENGLISH! When you speak to Canadians in English,
they will listen to what you say, NOT how you say it.

Enjoy your life in this country. It's easy to immigrate into another country. But, whether Canadians respect
you or treat you like Canadians is totally up to what you do here.

Well, I have some different opinions about learning English here. I do appreciate your advice here. Some are helpful and make sense. And I cannot agree with you more about Jerry. Believe or not, he is just the idol created by the community. One hand he brings the hope and encouragement to those Chinese immigrants, on the other hand, he can make some “tiny” profit on it. So it’s win-win situation. Everything is reasonable. In the reality, of course English is his second language and Of course he has Chinese accent. There is nothing wrong with that. It might be “a little bit” to overstate his success. But Come On! Look around! Watch TV commercial! Tell me what is so surprised? And for English, for all the languages, from my point of view, they are nothing but tools, just like a can-opener. Without cans, the can-opener will be just sitting in the drawn, totally useless. We do not need to be perfect. As long as people understand what I say, good enough for me. Why should I talk like a native Canadian? Oppositely, we should be proud of our accent, which shows who we are and where we come from. I still remember one Canadian guy (my first boss in the school) said to me, “if you do not understand any words, tell me right away and don’t be shame. You are already ahead of me because you can speak two languages.” Since that, whenever I make mistakes on my English, I will think of what he said. Then I am ok to move on. Share the story with you because I wish you guys can think the same way. LEAN ENGLISH, WITH DIGNITY.
