Psychology Writing Sample (excerpt)

Jean Piaget was concerned with the development of human intelligence and he proposed four stages that describe the evolution of cognition. Piaget’s background was in zoology and the natural sciences so he focused on the genetic capabilities of children and how the brain developed over time (Lefmann &Combs-Orme, 2013). Piaget had a tremendous impact on the field of psychology and helped revolutionize thought on child development (Rathus, 2011). Previously, most scientists believed that children thought and behaved in similar ways to adults and Piaget challenged this notion through demonstrating the stages of intellectual development through a child’s early years (Rathus,2011).

Piaget believed that cognitive development in humans occurred through changes in the brain and through the environment (Lefmann & Combs-Orme,2013). Piaget postulated that there were differences between the way adults and children process information. Piaget believed that children develop through stages to reach higher levels of cognition. These stages are sensorimotor (0-2years), preoperational (2-7 years), concrete operational (7-11 years), and formal operational (11-15 years) (Piaget, 1973). According to Piaget, children learn through action and problem-solving and eventually learn the rules of formal logic. Piaget viewed the child as being a constructionist learner, drawing on information about the environment to create a schema of knowledge. Piaget believed that the sequence of stages for intellectual development was the same for all humans. Further, Piaget stated that children are unable to learn or process information at a higher level of cognition before they have successfully passed through the lower levels (Rathus, 2011). Piaget made a significant contribution to the study of cognitive development through laying the foundation of early research on how children progress in their intellectual development. Piaget also contributed to education practice and policy through advocating a constructionist perspective to learning, whereby the student learns through discovery and the teacher is a facilitator rather than a sage (Driscoll,2000).

Sociology Writing Sample (Excerpt)

Aboriginal individuals, native persons or first inhabitants of Canada, are commonly referred to as a collective group with several descendants and rooted ancestry in the land of Canada (Greenwood & deLeeuw, 2012). Thus, it is not surprising that the disparities and adverse health amongst this group are somewhat of new phenomena as result of colonization and systemic racism(Logan, 2017). Pre-colonization Aboriginals living in their native land of Canada flourished and reaped the benefits of good health as they consumedtraditional diets and lived active lives (Logan, 2017). Traditional diets were balanced because they contained vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and proteins.

The oral history of Canada's Aboriginals indicates that they lived long lives before they had contact with other cultures (Lavallee& Poole, 2010). They celebrated their good health using physical, spiritual and ceremonial elements.Their healers at the time included shaman, herbal healers, and midwives.Furthermore, they had customary laws, which provided for hygiene and healthy eating (Wilson & Cardwell, 2012). The physical fitness of the Aboriginals of thepre-contact period is explicitly attributed to their active gathering, fishing, and hunting lifestyles (Greenwood & de Leeuw, 2012).

Spiritual healers among Canada's Aboriginals during the pre-contact period encouraged preventive and holistic approaches to care.Members of the community and family provided comfort and support to people who fell sick (Furgal, Garvin, & Jardine, 2010). All members of the extended family played a role in nurturing and raising children. As a result, the education, health, and growth of children were addressed. Contact between Canada's Aboriginals and non-Aboriginals occurred in the late 1700s (Wilson &Cardwell, 2012). During the period, Canadian Aboriginals had contact with British traders, the French,Russians, and the Spanish. Contact with explorers is attributed to the spread of epidemics such as a whooping cough, influenza, measles and smallpox to the Aboriginal community. Epidemics led to the decrease of the Aboriginal population (Cairns, 2011).

Grade 12 English Writing Sample (Excerpt)

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby (1925) represents the decadence and excess of America during the Jazz Age. The book is faithful to its time, as Fitzgerald specifically wanted to write a story about the moral decay, irresponsibility, and carelessness that he believed were a growing problem in the 1920s. As a result, the novel explores the values and morals of characters such as Nick Carraway,Jay Gatsby, and Daisy and Tom Buchanan. It is a story about the internal lives of the characters, which reflect the wider values of 1920s society. In contrast,Baz Lurhman’s 2013 film adaptation uses heavy stylism and special effects to create a vision of the 1920s. The characters act like set pieces, and the audience is not shown much about their internal state. There are also some major narrative differences between the movie and the book. However, both the book and movie are critical of Jazz Age morality, and they show how damaging the values of the time were to people. Overall, the film is faithful to the spirit of the novel, even though it ultimately fails to make for a successful adaptation.

Baz Lurhman’s 2013 film uses heavy stylism and special effects to re-create Fitzgerald’s vision of the1920s. The director is very famous for his use of stylism. His previous movies like Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet use modern music and special effects in a story set in the past. These films were major critical successes, and The Great Gatsby does the same. Lurhman uses modern hip-hop and rap music as background to the wild parties thrown by Gatsby. He also uses them as a soundtrack underneath so shots of New York City. It sounds odd to hear songs by Jay Z, will.i.am and Lana DelRey. This is done to make the audience identify more with the times. Playing modern music helps the audience in 2013 connect with the world of the 1920s.
